Staff Olympics!!!

In the middle of winter, especially here in central Alberta, things can get pretty gloomy.  I loved watching The Office and took the idea from the Office Olympics that the folks at Dunder Mifflin held and created a version for my elementary school staff.  What a lot of fun!!!

Staff Room Olympics
The Staff Room Olympics aims to follow the true Olympic ideals.

Competitors must not use performance enhancing drugs. This can include excessive consumption of coffee or tea prior to the marathon events.

Any failure of drug tests will result in a two week ban on the consumption of tea or coffee made by other colleagues.

Competitors enter all events at their own risk. No responsibility will be taken should the superintendent walk in and fire staff.

Medal winners are reminded that while pride in winning is allowed, gloating unnecessarily at your losing colleagues is not.

Remember to tell the losers that it is not the winning but having fun that matters!  Ha! Ha!

Winners will be announced after all events have been completed and the points tabulated.  Look for current standing in the staff room regularly!

The opening ceremonies became quite an affair.  Teams created names, chose colours and had to have a flag to carry during the ceremony.  I had them all line up in teams and played the national anthem as they paraded in.  So much fun!!  I will try to find pictures!!  As you can imagine, some of the teams went ALL OUT!!!  The "Olympic flame" that is mentioned was a candle in the staff room and was very climactic when lit!!!  lol  Each team was also required to present an original song to the rest of us at the opening ceremonies...HILARIOUS!  Then we went straight into our first event which was CART RACING!!  More about that below...

Staff Olympics-Opening Ceremonies
1.  Customary parade of athletes carrying their flags.
2.  The climactic lighting of the Olympic Flame and athletes’ candles.
3.  Songs of the ‘nations’.

4.  First Event- Cart Racing

Below you will find a detailed description of each event that we held.

Staff Room Olympics Events

Each team must have 4 members perform in each event.  If any team member is incapable or afraid to perform an activity, players can go twice in the place of the other.  No player can go more than twice in any event.
Cart Racing
Team event (2 players chosen to compete)
The school hallway is the location for this event.

Teams must roll the cart around the hallway trying to be fast and trying to spill the least amount of water in the cup.

Points will be awarded based on two sets of points: 1) Time and 2) Technical Expertise
1) Time: The fastest team gets 6 points, the second fastest gets 5 points… the last team to cross the finish line gets 1 point. NOTE: If the cup is dropped at any time during the race, the team is automatically disqualified.
2) Technical Expertise (unspilled water): The team having the most water that is poured in the measuring cup at the finish line gets 6 points, the second most gets 5 points….the least amount poured in the measuring device gets 1 point.

The winner will be the team with the least amount of spillage and the fastest speed.  (or a combined score)

Rubber Band Archery
Individual event- 4 members must compete
The object of the game is to have each team member shoot rubber bands into bins that have various points.  Try to get the most accumulated points for your team!

Each team member will have 20 colored rubber bands to shoot at the ‘target’

·         The participant will stand at a line approximately 10 feet from the ‘targets’, which are small garbage cans; each can has a point designation.
·         After all rubber bands have been shot, points will be tallied.
·         Scores will be awarded based on the following: highest point tally = first place; second highest point total = second place; and third highest points = third place.
·         In case of a tie, those participants will complete a second round with 5 rubber bands.

Mousemat Discus
Individual event- 4 members must compete
This being a throwing event, a degree of office space is required before contestants begin.
Participants must sit in a swivel chair at the start point and hold the mousemat in their left or right hand. Standard mouse mats for the discus event are mandatory, no use of gel padded mats allowed.
On the shout of "duck" the thrower must first swivel a full 360 degrees in the chair before hurling the mat as far as possible.

The winner is the contestant who throws the mat the furthest without hitting a colleague. Anyone throwing a mat through an open window faces disqualification.

Wheely Chair Racing
Individual event - 4 members must compete
A large area is obviously needed for this, with suitable obstacles - e.g. desks, photocopiers, people, placed along the route.

It is recommended that each participant takes it in turns to make their way around the course, using the obstacles to push themselves around or one foot on the ground as a pivot.

The winner is the one to complete the course, without crashing, in the fastest time.

Paper Airplane Distance Throw
Individual event- 4 members must compete
The object of this event is to make paper airplanes to see whose flies the longest distance.

Each team member will have 1 minute to build a plane.  The team will then throw their planes and the overall distance that the whole team’s airplanes flew will be recorded.
